The Ministry of Development will assume the cost of the Madrid-Puertollano-Mérida-Badajoz railway line, which until now was paid by the Extremadura Government, as explained in the press conference after the Council of Ministers, its owner, Iñigo de la Serna.

As indicated, the Council of Ministers has made two important decisions for Extremadura and Aragon, communities that at the time assumed the provision of commuter lines and established a contract with Renfe to pay the amount corresponding to the deficit in the provision of those services.

De la Serna has indicated that once the services have been analyzed one by one, the Government has decided that it is going to take over one of the lines in each autonomous community.

In the case of Extremadura, it will assume the one that connects Madrid with Badajoz, which passes through Puertollano and Mérida, because it understands “that it already meets the criteria for its declaration as a Public Service Obligation (OSP)”.

The minister added that this is one of the five relationships that the Extremadura Board currently has assumed.

From now on, it remains only that the contract between the General State Administration and Renfe can be formalized so that these services become effective, something that is intended to be done throughout the first quarter of next year.
