It has been one of the priority objectives of the Port Authority for years and, promoted during the mandate of Javier Barrero with a meeting with Guillermo Fernández Vara and the visit to the Huelva facilities of at least two councilors of the Board, which exports food and agriculture from the neighboring community are exported through the Port of Huelva and not through the Portuguese of Sines, it is still marked on the agenda of the new president.

The fire was opened by the Minister for the Environment of the Junta de Extremadura, Begoña García Bernal, who visited the facilities of the Port of Huelva last July, when she announced the holding of a meeting with representatives of the Administrator of Railway Infrastructures (Adif) and Extremadura charges to study the promotion of railway infrastructures in which they are especially interested, especially the one that connects the region with the Sevillian capital. It was his own intermediation that allowed the Huelva Port Authority to attend the meeting, which sent his Head of the Infrastructure Department, since it was considered that his participation, as well as the projects that are currently underway to develop the line between Huelva and Zafra, were priority for both entities.

The president of the Port Authority of Huelva, José Luis Ramos, confirmed yesterday that for the port of Huelva, connectivity with Extremadura is “fundamental” and was in favor of improving rail connections with this autonomous community. Ramos alluded to the technical meeting that took place between Adif representatives from the Extremadura Regional Government and the Port of Huelva itself. Ramos stressed that it is important to know what level of contribution each administration would make to improve connectivity between Extremadura and the Port of Huelva. In any case, the predisposition from Huelva is “total” given the relevance that “the Port of Extremadura” would have.

For this reason, he maintained that it is necessary to work “hard” at the technical level to achieve this objective among all the parties, stressing that everything is currently in an initial phase. In this sense and regarding the importance of the Majarabique railway terminal in the connection with Extremadura, the President of the Port has stressed that it “greatly facilitates the work”, so that “if we did not have Majarabique it would be more difficult to talk about that connection “with the Extremaduran territory.

Huelva’s intention to attract traffic from Extremadura was forged last year with the visit on June 24 by the Minister for the Economy, José Luis Navarro, and the Minister for the Environment, Begoña García Bernal, just a month later. Both knew both the intentions and the facilities of the South Dock, which will house the operations that inevitably go through the improvement of the Huelva-Zafra line.

For this section, the Port of Huelva keeps an open game waiting to specify its destination with those responsible for the Ministry of Development. Since then, the entry into service of the Majarabique terminal has promoted the importance of intermodality that is intended to be achieved in port facilities and multiplies its connections.
